A Fearless New Year, A Fearless New You

A Fearless New Year, A Fearless New You

A Fearless New Year

With a new year comes New Years’ Resolutions. January 1st feels like a fresh beginning. A good place to start over. A jumping off point where we can reinvent ourselves, become better people, and finish those projects that we left to gather dust just a few short months ago. We can put the past year behind us and start over.

Jon Acuff says that the first of the year is like a sling shot propelling us into the new year. We only get one chance to make the new year new and that can seem a little overwhelming.

By this point, many have already given up on their New Year’s Resolutions. Statistically about 91% of people have. They’ve deemed them too hard to keep up with or perhaps a bad idea in the first place. Some people have already been overwhelmed with life or the news and what’s going on in the world. Those plans that we made at the beginning of the new year have already become something that we plan to pick back up on Monday or the first of the next month. They may have already become something that just didn’t work out.

A Fearless New You

What if, instead of just resolving to accomplish a list of unrealistic goals, things you’ve been meaning to do, but you’ve been putting them off, you just made one resolution? Instead of resolving to be a new you in the new year, you decided to be a fearless new you. To go into the new year fearlessly accomplishing the things you’ve been trying to. Approaching each goal unafraid, no matter how it works out in the end.

Because here’s the thing, fear is what holds us back and keeps us from accomplishing our goals. But fear is a liar.

Why Be Fearless?

Fear will lie to you and tell you that you cannot accomplish the goals you’ve set out to accomplish. It will tell you that you aren’t good enough, it’s too hard, you’re not smart enough. The lies that we believe become the fears that hold us back. They become the fear that we listen to when we want to try new things.

To be fearless is not to be without fear. Fear is going to happen, but how we respond to it, facing it head-on instead of running away from it is what will define us in the end. It’s what will set us apart when the time comes.

Every year we set goals and resolutions to become better people, when what we are really searching for is purpose. We think that setting these goals, this “new year, new you” mentality will change us and make us better people. But the truth is, without purpose, without something to live and strive for, we will never find that peace.

Fear will rob us of our purpose and our peace. These lies that we believe about ourselves will ultimately make us into people we do not want to be. To find our purpose, to find peace in who we are, we must first become fearless.

How to Be Fearless

Overcoming fear is an easier task than we believe, but it takes a lot of work. It’s easy to want to give up. To say, “It’s easier to be afraid than to be fearless.”

So, how does one become fearless? How does one conquer the fear that has held them back and move forward fearlessly into who they were meant to be?

We must first address the lies we’ve believed. Lies that have been given to us by others and lies that we have given ourselves to protect us. The lies that say you’re not good enough. You are a failure. You’re too much. You’re not enough, not smart enough, tall enough, or pretty enough. These are the lies that keep us from being able to move forward. The ones that keep us from being able to stick with a new hobby or learn a new talent because we’re afraid we won’t be any good at it.

When we address the lies, the fear seems so much less looming. We can find peace and move forward into our purpose.

What lie is holding you back today? What lie have you believed for far too long? Make this the year that you address the lies that steal your purpose. This is the year that you become a fearless new you.
